Yes, you can donate a car with expired tags in Charlotte

In the Charlotte Metro, expired registration usually does NOT stop you from donating your car. Drive to Give just needs a valid title in your name, then we tow it free and you get your tax receipt.

If your car’s registration has lapsed, you can almost always still donate it in the Charlotte Metro. With Drive to Give, what matters is a valid North Carolina title in your name — not whether your tags are current. You do not need to renew the registration, pay back fees, get an inspection, or make the car drivable. We arrange fast, free towing from your driveway, apartment lot, or workplace anywhere from Uptown Charlotte to Ballantyne, Huntersville, Concord, or Gastonia.

Here’s how it works in North Carolina: when you donate, you sign your NC title directly over to Drive to Give (benefiting Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3)). Our towing partner picks up the vehicle at no cost to you. After pickup, the vehicle becomes our responsibility — not yours. You should notify the NCDMV that you transferred the vehicle so you’re not tied to future tickets or taxes. We send you a tax receipt (typically at least $500; larger deductions may use IRS Form 1098-C). Expired or lapsed registration is normal with donated cars in Charlotte, especially ones that have sat in driveways in places like Steele Creek, University City, and Mint Hill.

How to get your free pickup scheduled

1

1. Check that you have a valid North Carolina title

Put your hands on the title first. For donation, the big requirement is a valid NC title in your name, not current tags or inspection. The name on the title should match your ID. If you’re in Mecklenburg or nearby counties and you’re missing the title, we can walk you through requesting a replacement from NCDMV before pickup.

2

2. Tell us about your car and expired registration

Go online or call to share basic details: year, make, model, location (South End, Matthews, Rock Hill, etc.), and that the registration is expired. Be upfront about how long it’s been sitting or any damage. Expired tags are common — we just need to know where the vehicle is and whether we can access it easily for towing.

3

3. Schedule free towing anywhere in the Charlotte Metro

Once we confirm your title, we’ll set a pickup time that works for you. Our tow partner comes to your home, apartment complex, storage lot, or mechanic shop at no cost, even if the car doesn’t start or has flat tires. No driving is required, so expired tags, failed inspection, or no insurance are not a problem for the donation process.

4

4. Sign the title and hand over the keys at pickup

At pickup, you’ll sign the NC title over to Drive to Give following our simple instructions. The tow driver will confirm the paperwork, load the vehicle, and leave you with a preliminary receipt. After this point, the vehicle is no longer in your possession, and we begin the process of selling it to benefit Heritage for the Blind.

5

5. Notify NCDMV and keep your tax receipt

After pickup, you should report the transfer of ownership to the North Carolina DMV and, if applicable, remove or surrender your plates. This helps avoid any future tax notices or tickets linked to the vehicle. Then, watch for your official tax receipt from Drive to Give, which you can use when you file your federal return and complete IRS Form 1098-C if your deduction exceeds $500.

Potential complications to watch for

Name on the title doesn’t match the current owner

Tip: If the car is still in a previous owner’s or a deceased relative’s name, we can’t complete donation until that’s corrected. In North Carolina, that may mean handling an estate transfer or getting a corrected title from NCDMV. Call us before towing so we can guide you on what the DMV will likely require.

Lien still showing on the title from a past loan

Tip: Even if the loan is paid off, a recorded lien on the title can delay donation. Check the front of your NC title for any listed lienholder. If one appears, you may need a lien release or a clean replacement title from NCDMV. We’ll explain what documents to ask your lender or the DMV for so towing isn’t wasted.

Vehicle is hard to access or blocked in

Tip: Tow trucks need room to hook up safely. If your expired-registration vehicle is in a tight South End garage, behind other cars, or sunk in a yard, tell us in advance. We can often still arrange pickup, but the tow company may need a different truck or extra time. Accurate details help avoid rescheduling and get your car gone faster.

Out-of-state title or non-NC registration history

Tip: If your title is from another state but the car is now in Charlotte, we can usually accept it, but rules differ slightly. Let us know which state issued the title and whether the registration lapsed there or in North Carolina. We’ll confirm what’s needed so you don’t waste money trying to re-register just to donate.

FAQ

Do I have to renew my expired registration before donating?
No. In the Charlotte Metro and across North Carolina, you do not need to renew an expired registration or pay back fees to donate. Drive to Give relies on the title transfer, not active registration. We send a tow truck, so the car never needs to be driven on the road with lapsed tags, inspection, or insurance.
Will I still get a tax deduction if my tags are expired?
Yes. Your tax deduction is based on what happens when we sell the donated vehicle, not your registration status. Expired tags do not affect your eligibility for a deduction. You’ll receive a tax receipt from Drive to Give benefiting Heritage for the Blind, and if your deduction exceeds $500, you’ll typically use IRS Form 1098-C when you file.
Can you pick up a non-running car that has been sitting for years?
Yes. Many Charlotte donors come to us with cars that haven’t run in a long time and have very old, expired stickers. As long as the vehicle is mostly intact and we can reach it with a tow truck, we can usually accept it. The car does not need to start, pass inspection, or be safe to drive for us to complete a donation.
What do I need to give the tow driver on pickup day?
Have your NC title, your ID, and the keys ready. We’ll show you exactly how to sign the title over to Drive to Give before the driver arrives. If you have maintenance records or extra keys, you can send them too, but they’re optional. The tow is free, typically quick, and after the title is signed, the vehicle is our responsibility.
How do I protect myself from future tickets or tax bills?
After your car is towed, notify the North Carolina DMV that you’ve transferred the vehicle and, if you kept them, remove or surrender your plates. This helps separate you from any future property taxes or citations on that VIN. Keep your donation paperwork and tax receipt from Drive to Give in case any questions come up later.
Can I donate if my car failed emissions or safety inspection?
Yes. Failed inspection is one of the most common reasons Charlotte owners stop renewing registration. That does not prevent donation. We don’t require a current inspection sticker to accept your vehicle. Our tow partner will pick it up as-is from your home in areas like Plaza Midwood, Lake Norman, or Fort Mill at no cost to you.
What if my registration is expired in another state but the car is in Charlotte?
You can usually still donate. We’ll need to know which state the title is from and whether there are any special markings, like salvage or lien notations. In most cases, we can accept out-of-state titles without you re-registering first. Tell us the full story, and we’ll confirm the best way to complete the transfer and schedule towing.
