Drive to Give provides genuinely free car donation pickup across Charlotte and the surrounding Charlotte Metro. Whether you’re in Plaza Midwood, South End, University City, Ballantyne, or out toward Huntersville and Matthews, we send a local towing partner to you. You don’t pay a pickup fee now or later—the tow is covered from the charity’s sale proceeds, never billed back to you.
Here’s how it works in the Charlotte area: you call us or submit the online form, we confirm your vehicle details, and you choose a convenient pickup window. On the day of pickup, you simply leave the signed North Carolina title and keys with the vehicle—on your driveway, in your apartment lot, or at a safe agreed-on spot. A local flatbed or hook-and-chain truck comes out, loads your vehicle (running or not), and handles all transport. In most of Charlotte Metro, pickup happens within a few business days; very rural addresses may take a bit longer depending on routing. It’s simple, local, and always $0 to you.
How to schedule your free local pickup
1. Tell us about your vehicle and Charlotte location
Start by calling Drive to Give or filling out our simple online form. Share your Charlotte-area address, where the vehicle is parked (driveway, street, apartment lot), and basic vehicle details. We accept most cars, trucks, vans, and SUVs in any condition—running or not—throughout Charlotte Metro, including nearby communities like Gastonia, Concord, Matthews, and Huntersville.
2. Choose a free pickup window that works for you
A local coordinator reviews your info and offers available pickup windows. In denser areas like Uptown, South End, Dilworth, and NoDa, we can usually schedule within a few business days. More rural spots outside Charlotte proper may need a little extra routing time, but the tow is still completely free and arranged around your availability.
3. Prepare your NC title, keys, and parking spot
Before pickup day, locate your North Carolina title and remove your license plates. Sign where indicated for a sale/transfer; if you’re unsure, we’ll explain what to fill out. Make sure the tow truck can reach the vehicle—clear other cars, note low-hanging trees, and, if needed, get any HOA or apartment parking permission so the flatbed has room to load safely.
4. Leave the title and keys with the vehicle
On pickup day, you don’t have to be home if we’ve already confirmed everything. Place the signed title and keys in a secure, agreed-on spot inside the car or hand them to the driver if you’ll be there. Our local towing partner will load your vehicle, complete any remaining paperwork, and tow it away at no cost to you.
5. Receive your tax receipt after the vehicle is sold
Once your donated car is sold, Drive to Give mails you a tax receipt. Most donors can claim at least a $500 deduction; for donations valued over $500, you’ll receive the IRS Form 1098-C information you need. We handle the sale logistics so you can claim your deduction and know your car supported services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Local pickup gotchas
Tight Uptown or South End streets and parking garages
Tip: Flatbeds can’t always access tight garages, low-clearance decks, or narrow one-way streets common in Uptown and South End. If you can, move the vehicle to an open lot, curbside space, or surface parking area where a full-size tow truck can safely maneuver and load.
Gated communities, condos, and HOA rules
Tip: If you’re in a gated neighborhood around Ballantyne, Steele Creek, or Lake Norman, make sure the tow driver has gate codes, visitor instructions, and any required HOA permissions. Let us know about codes or call boxes when scheduling so your pickup isn’t delayed at the entrance or denied by security.
Very rural or lake-area addresses outside Charlotte
Tip: Homes out by Mount Pleasant, Clover, or rural areas past Lake Wylie may take longer to route. We still cover towing at $0, but scheduling can stretch a bit beyond a few business days. Share detailed directions and any access issues so we can match the right truck and plan the best route.
Vehicle blocked in or on soft ground
Tip: If your car is boxed in behind other vehicles, on a steep incline, or parked in soft grass or mud, loading can be difficult. Before pickup, rearrange cars, move it to firmer ground if possible, and tell us about any slope or surface issues so the driver can come prepared.
If at-home pickup is tricky
If an at-home pickup is tricky for your situation—for example, if your Uptown apartment garage won’t allow tow trucks, or your HOA in SouthPark has strict towing rules—we can often arrange a nearby meet-up or alternate spot. Some donors drive their vehicle to a friend’s driveway in Matthews or a workplace lot in University City where a flatbed can easily load. In a few cases, you may coordinate with a local shop or storage lot that allows after-hours tows. We’ll talk through your options so you can still donate your car without paying anything for transport.
Charlotte pickup coverage
Drive to Give serves the entire Charlotte Metro: from Uptown, NoDa, and Plaza Midwood to Myers Park, Dilworth, SouthPark, Steele Creek, and beyond to Concord, Gastonia, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, and Lake Norman communities. In-city pickups typically happen within a few business days; more rural North Carolina addresses may need slightly longer routing. When you donate, remove your NC plates before pickup and return them to the NC DMV or follow current state guidance.
