You don’t need current registration, inspection, or a running engine—just the title at pickup. We’ll handle the tow, sale, and tax paperwork, including your written acknowledgment for your records.

It typically takes under two minutes. This creates your donation record and starts the clock to schedule your year-end pickup in Charlotte Metro.
Get a quick callback to schedule pickup
Within 1–2 business hoursOn weekdays, a local donation coordinator calls you back within 1–2 hours to confirm your information and schedule your free tow. You choose the pickup window that works—same-day or next business day in most Charlotte areas, including Uptown, SouthPark, and surrounding suburbs.
Confirm a Dec 31 or earlier tow time
During that scheduling callTell the coordinator you need this tax year’s deduction. If the truck can reach you on or before Dec 31, that pickup date becomes your IRS donation date. Once your Dec 31 (or earlier) slot is booked, your deduction is locked to this year—as long as the tow is completed as scheduled.
Free tow truck picks up your vehicle
Same-day or next business day in most metrosA licensed tow truck meets you at your Charlotte address—home, work, or a repair shop. Your car can be non-running, damaged, or without recent inspection or registration. The driver verifies the vehicle, has you sign the title, and tows it away at no cost to you.
Vehicle is sold and tax paperwork mailed
Within 30 days of saleAfter pickup, your vehicle is transported and sold for the benefit of Heritage for the Blind. Once it sells, you receive IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment by mail within 30 days of the sale, showing the gross proceeds and the date you donated for your tax records.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Dec 31 pickup = this year’s deduction
For vehicle donations, the IRS uses the date the charity takes possession of your car. If Drive to Give’s tow truck picks up your vehicle on or before Dec 31, that donation counts for this tax year—even if the sale happens later.
Form 1098-C for larger deductions
If your donated vehicle sells for more than the IRS reporting threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098-C. This form shows the sale price and must be filed with your return when you itemize a higher-value car donation.
Deduction usually equals sale price
In most cases, your deductible amount is the gross selling price of the vehicle, not a pricing guide estimate. Your 1098-C or written acknowledgment will list this amount so you and your tax preparer can correctly claim it on Schedule A.
30-day written acknowledgment deadline
By IRS rules, the charity must send a written acknowledgment within 30 days of selling the car. Heritage for the Blind mails this to the address you provide, giving you the documentation you need to back up your deduction at tax time.
Itemizing on Schedule A
To benefit from a charitable car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. Your acknowledgment or Form 1098-C supports the amount you claim. Always confirm specifics with your tax advisor.
