Donate your car by Dec 31 for 2024 taxes in Charlotte

Two minutes to start, one call to schedule. In Charlotte Metro, a pickup on or before Dec 31 locks in your 2024 IRS deduction. Free, fast towing from your driveway on your schedule.

If your car is picked up on or before December 31 in the Charlotte Metro area, the IRS counts your donation for this tax year. With Drive to Give, you can start in under two minutes, schedule a free pickup that fits your calendar, and know your deduction is tied to the actual pickup date. You don’t need current registration, inspection, or a running engine—just the title at pickup. We’ll handle the tow, sale, and tax paperwork, including your written acknowledgment for your records.

Drive to Give partners with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to turn your vehicle into support for people who are blind or visually impaired. We serve donors across Charlotte Metro—Uptown, South End, Plaza Midwood, NoDa, University City, Ballantyne, Matthews, Huntersville, Concord, Gastonia, and beyond. Same-day or next-business-day towing is available in most Charlotte neighborhoods Monday through Saturday. If you’re ready to donate, you’re in the right place: follow the steps below, lock in your year-end tax benefit, and clear your driveway while helping a neighbor in need.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Start the 2-minute form or call now

2 minutes

Enter your contact, vehicle location, and basic car details in our secure online form, or call Drive to Give and ask for Heritage for the Blind donations. It typically takes under two minutes. This creates your donation record and starts the clock to schedule your year-end pickup in Charlotte Metro.

2

Get a quick callback to schedule pickup

Within 1–2 business hours

On weekdays, a local donation coordinator calls you back within 1–2 hours to confirm your information and schedule your free tow. You choose the pickup window that works—same-day or next business day in most Charlotte areas, including Uptown, SouthPark, and surrounding suburbs.

3

Confirm a Dec 31 or earlier tow time

During that scheduling call

Tell the coordinator you need this tax year’s deduction. If the truck can reach you on or before Dec 31, that pickup date becomes your IRS donation date. Once your Dec 31 (or earlier) slot is booked, your deduction is locked to this year—as long as the tow is completed as scheduled.

4

Free tow truck picks up your vehicle

Same-day or next business day in most metros

A licensed tow truck meets you at your Charlotte address—home, work, or a repair shop. Your car can be non-running, damaged, or without recent inspection or registration. The driver verifies the vehicle, has you sign the title, and tows it away at no cost to you.

5

Vehicle is sold and tax paperwork mailed

Within 30 days of sale

After pickup, your vehicle is transported and sold for the benefit of Heritage for the Blind. Once it sells, you receive IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment by mail within 30 days of the sale, showing the gross proceeds and the date you donated for your tax records.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup = this year’s deduction

For vehicle donations, the IRS uses the date the charity takes possession of your car. If Drive to Give’s tow truck picks up your vehicle on or before Dec 31, that donation counts for this tax year—even if the sale happens later.

Form 1098-C for larger deductions

If your donated vehicle sells for more than the IRS reporting threshold, Heritage for the Blind issues Form 1098-C. This form shows the sale price and must be filed with your return when you itemize a higher-value car donation.

Deduction usually equals sale price

In most cases, your deductible amount is the gross selling price of the vehicle, not a pricing guide estimate. Your 1098-C or written acknowledgment will list this amount so you and your tax preparer can correctly claim it on Schedule A.

30-day written acknowledgment deadline

By IRS rules, the charity must send a written acknowledgment within 30 days of selling the car. Heritage for the Blind mails this to the address you provide, giving you the documentation you need to back up your deduction at tax time.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To benefit from a charitable car donation, you generally need to itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. Your acknowledgment or Form 1098-C supports the amount you claim. Always confirm specifics with your tax advisor.

FAQ

If my car is picked up on December 31 in Charlotte, does it count for this tax year?
Yes. The IRS considers the donation date to be when the charity (through its tow company) takes possession of your vehicle. If your car is physically picked up on or before December 31 in the Charlotte area, it counts as a donation for this tax year, even if the car is sold in the following year.
How late in December can I start the process and still make the Dec 31 cutoff?
Because tow schedules fill up around the holidays, start your donation as soon as you know you’re ready—ideally at least a few days before December 31. In many Charlotte Metro neighborhoods we can do same-day or next-business-day pickups, but end-of-year slots are limited. Completing the 2‑minute form or calling now gives you the best chance to secure a Dec 31 or earlier tow.
Does the car need to run, be inspected, or have current registration?
No. Non-running vehicles are welcome, and we do not require a current inspection or registration for donation. The tow is free, and the driver can safely load inoperable cars. You typically just need the title at pickup so you can sign ownership over to Heritage for the Blind through Drive to Give’s program.
When will I receive my tax receipt or Form 1098-C?
After pickup, your vehicle is sold for the benefit of Heritage for the Blind. Within 30 days of the sale, you’ll receive IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment by mail. It will include the vehicle information, donation date, and the gross sale amount used to determine your eligible deduction.
Can I donate if I live outside central Charlotte but still in the metro area?
Yes. Drive to Give arranges free towing throughout Charlotte Metro, including areas like Huntersville, Cornelius, Concord, Kannapolis, Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Gastonia, and Fort Mill. Same-day or next-business-day pickups are available in most of these areas, especially if you start your donation earlier in December.
Is Heritage for the Blind a real charity, and how is my car used?
Heritage for the Blind is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446). Your vehicle is picked up, sold, and the net proceeds support programs and services for people who are blind or visually impaired. You receive a tax acknowledgment documenting your donation and the amount the vehicle sold for, when applicable.
Do I need to decide my deduction amount, or does the charity do that?
You don’t have to guess the amount. After the vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind provides a written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C showing the gross sale price and the donation date. You or your tax professional then use that documentation when completing Schedule A, following IRS rules for vehicle donations.
