Donate your car by Dec 31 for a 2024 Charlotte tax break

In Charlotte Metro, the IRS counts the date your car is picked up—not when you schedule. Get free pickup by December 31 and lock in this year’s deduction in just minutes.

In Charlotte, your car donation only counts for this tax year if it’s physically picked up by December 31. The IRS uses the pickup date as your official donation date—not the day you call or book online. That means if you want your deduction on this year’s return, your vehicle must be towed away on or before December 31. With Drive to Give, benefiting Heritage for the Blind, we strongly recommend you schedule 3–5 business days before December 31 so our Monday–Saturday trucks can reach you in time.

Drive to Give offers fast, free pickup across the Charlotte Metro—from Uptown, Plaza Midwood, NoDa, South End, and Dilworth to Ballantyne, Steele Creek, University City, Huntersville, Concord, Gastonia, Matthews, and beyond. We accept cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans, even non-running vehicles, with no inspections or repairs needed. Heritage for the Blind is a real 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446); your donation helps support programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. Start our simple 2-minute form or call now to reserve your year-end pickup slot before they fill up—and secure your tax deduction for this year.

Vehicle is picked up—your deduction year is locked

Pickup day

When our driver arrives and loads your vehicle on or before December 31, that day becomes your official IRS donation date. You’ll receive a preliminary towing receipt at pickup showing that Heritage for the Blind received your vehicle this tax year.

5

Receive your written tax acknowledgment by mail

Within weeks after sale

After your car is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails your written acknowledgment. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, you’ll receive IRS Form 1098‑C. Even though the form comes later, your deduction still applies to the year your car was picked up—if that date was on or before December 31.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup = this year’s deduction

The IRS uses the date your vehicle is actually picked up as the donation date. If your car is towed away on or before December 31, you may claim the deduction on this year’s tax return, even if the paperwork arrives later.

Scheduling vs. pickup: what really counts

Calling or filling out the form on December 31 isn’t enough. Your car must be physically picked up by then to count for this tax year. That’s why we urge Charlotte donors to schedule 3–5 business days before December 31 whenever possible.

Form 1098-C for vehicles over $500

If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind issues IRS Form 1098‑C. This form shows the gross sale price, which typically determines the maximum deduction amount you can claim when you itemize on your federal tax return.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To claim a car donation deduction, you generally must itemize deductions on IRS Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Consult your tax advisor to confirm whether itemizing and claiming your Charlotte-area car donation makes sense for your situation.

Written acknowledgment mailed after the sale

Heritage for the Blind sends a written acknowledgment—often within 30 days of the vehicle’s sale. The mailing date doesn’t affect your deduction year; the key is the pickup date. As long as pickup occurred by December 31, the deduction applies to that tax year.

FAQ

If my car is picked up after December 31, can I still claim this year’s deduction?
No. For IRS purposes, the donation date is when your vehicle is actually picked up, not when you schedule or call. If the tow happens on January 2, for example, it applies to the new tax year. To claim this year’s deduction, your car must be picked up by December 31 in the Charlotte area.
How early should I schedule my Charlotte pickup to meet the deadline?
We recommend scheduling your pickup at least 3–5 business days before December 31. That buffer helps us secure a Monday–Saturday pickup window that works in your part of Charlotte—whether you’re in South End, NoDa, Matthews, Huntersville, or elsewhere—before year-end demand fills up our trucks.
Do you accept non-running or damaged vehicles in Charlotte Metro?
Yes. We accept non-running, damaged, or old vehicles as long as a tow truck can reach them. There’s no inspection or repair required. Our drivers regularly pick up vehicles from driveways, garages, apartment lots, and street parking throughout Charlotte Metro at no cost to you.
When will I get my tax receipt or Form 1098-C?
You’ll receive an initial towing receipt at pickup, confirming your car was donated to Heritage for the Blind. After the vehicle is sold, the charity mails your official acknowledgment—and Form 1098‑C if it sells for more than $500. This often arrives within weeks, but the deduction year is based on your pickup date.
How much can I deduct for my donated car?
In many cases, if the vehicle sells for more than $500, your maximum deduction is the gross sale price listed on Form 1098‑C. For certain lower-value gifts, fair market value rules may apply. Because everyone’s taxes are different, talk with your tax advisor about how your Charlotte donation fits your return.
Is Heritage for the Blind a qualified charity for tax purposes?
Yes. Heritage for the Blind is a recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 58-2164446). Donations of vehicles made through Drive to Give can generally be tax-deductible when you itemize, subject to IRS rules. Your gift helps support services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
Can I still donate close to New Year’s if I’m busy or out of town?
Often, yes. As long as someone can provide access to the vehicle and the signed title, we may be able to complete pickup without you present. However, year-end slots in Charlotte fill quickly. Contact us as early as possible so we can work around your holiday travel and still meet the December 31 deadline.
